Why we picked it
Beeswax costs more than paraffin and behaves better. It burns slower, so 35 hours from one pillar is realistic rather than optimistic; it burns cleaner, without the soot marks paraffin leaves on a wall over a winter; and the flame is slightly brighter and warmer in color. The yellow is natural rather than dyed, which is why these look like candlelight even sitting unlit on a shelf in the afternoon.
Styling notes
Pillars want company. One on its own looks a bit stranded, whereas six lined up along a wooden board down the center of a table, or grouped at mixed heights on a tray, give you a low spread of light that a single large candle can't produce. Keep them out of a draught, or they'll burn down one side and lose the shape within a couple of evenings. Trim the wicks each time, since a long wick on beeswax gives you a tall, smoky flame rather than a steady one.
Good to know
- The faint honey smell is natural to the wax. Nothing has been added.
- Keep the wicks trimmed to about 5mm for a steady flame.
