Why we picked it

A chunky knit does something a flat throw can't: it looks finished before anyone touches it. The thick cable pattern gives the arm of a sofa or the foot of a bed a texture you can see from across the room, and chenille is soft enough that it gets picked up and used. The knit is open, with small gaps between the stitches, so it's warm without being airless, which is the usual complaint about heavy blankets. At just under four pounds it has real weight in your lap without being a weighted blanket.

It's polyester, and we'd rather say so. The synthetic version is soft, holds its shape, goes in the washing machine and asks nothing of you. For a throw that will live on the sofa and get used every day, that's a reasonable trade.

Styling notes

Don't fold it. A chunky knit looks best slumped: one corner dropped over the arm of the sofa and the rest in a loose heap on the seat, or half-draped over the back so the cable pattern catches the light. In a large basket beside the sofa it reads as the sort of thing a home has when people actually sit in it.

Ivory is the easy choice with the rest of this collection, since it sits alongside oat, greige and linen without competing. If your sofa is already pale, a darker color gives the throw something to do. The 50 × 60 is a lap and sofa size. To lay it across the foot of a bed, go up a size or two.
