Lighting changes how a room feels faster than anything else you can buy, and it's also the thing most homes get wrong. A single bright bulb in the middle of the ceiling flattens everything underneath it. Two or three low, warm pools of light do the opposite. What we look for is warm color temperature, real dimming rather than two brightness settings, and shapes that still look right in five years. 2700K is roughly candlelight and it's the number worth remembering when you're buying bulbs. Battery-powered pieces turn out to matter more than they sound like they should, because they break the link between where the sockets are and where the light goes — which is the whole game if you rent and can't touch the wiring. Most people light the corner with the plug socket instead of the corner they actually sit in.

If you take one thing from this collection, make it the rule of three. Aim for three points of light in a room instead of one: something at eye level, something low and warm, and something washing against a wall. That arrangement reads far cosier than a single good source, however expensive the fitting.
