The details

  • Material: white paper shade, foldable
  • Size: 21.9 in (55.5 cm) diameter oblate shade
  • Notes: diffuses light into the whole room rather than pointing it somewhere

Why we picked it

Rentals are full of bare bulbs hanging from the ceiling, and almost nothing else makes a room feel as temporary. A paper globe is the cheapest fix there is. It spreads the light out instead of firing it straight down, so shadows go soft and the whole room warms up a shade. At 55.5cm across, this one is large enough to carry a bedroom or a dining corner without any other change.

Styling notes

Hang it lower than feels natural. A pendant tight against the ceiling reads as a fitting, while one hung down into the room reads as an object, and that's the difference you're paying for. Over a dining corner or a reading chair it can sit quite low; centered in a bedroom, keep it above head height for anyone walking under it. Put a warm 2700K bulb inside, since cool white through paper looks oddly grey. It arrives flat packed, and the fold lines take a few hours to settle once it's up.

Good to know

  • Ships flat and folds out. Allow a few hours for the creases to relax.
  • Use a warm LED bulb. Paper shades look best around 2700K.
