Why we picked it
Most small lamps are an afterthought, a bulb on a stick. This one is shaped to do something with the light. The glass is speckled, and the maker says each one is finished by hand with black glass grains, so instead of a hard spot you get a soft, patterned glow that pools under the dome. It's a mid-century shape, and it has been around long enough to look current rather than trendy.
The dimmer is what earns it a place. 2700K is warm to begin with, and because the dimming is stepless it brightens smoothly rather than in two or three jumps. Turned all the way down it works as a night light.
One difference from the rest of this collection: it plugs in. If you need light for a corner with no outlet, the cordless lamps are the better choice. If the spot has a socket, this is the better-looking small lamp.
Styling notes
At about seven inches tall it's meant to sit low and glow, not to light the whole room. A bedside table, the end of a console, a shelf at eye level next to a few books. Give the glow something to bounce off. A pale wall or a mirror behind it makes the light go further, while against a dark wall it gets absorbed and the lamp reads as a small dark shape.
Two look more deliberate than one: one on each side of a bed, or at either end of a console. Dark brown-black and black are the safe colors. White, blue and pink do more of the work in a room that's otherwise quiet, so decide by the wall behind it.
Good to know
- Plug-in only. Check that an outlet is within reach of where you want it.
- The LED bulb is included. If you replace it, use a dimmable E26 bulb so the dimmer keeps working.
- It's glass. Wipe it with a soft, dry cloth.
