Why we picked it

What this is: a cushion cover. A pillow cover, if that is the word you use — same thing, both correct. It is the outer layer only. There are no inserts in the box, and it is not bedding: we do not sell a boucle duvet cover, quilt cover or comforter set, and if that is what you came for this is not it. Worth saying plainly, because boucle bedding and boucle cushions get filed together by search engines and almost nowhere else.

Covers-only is the right way to buy this anyway. Inserts are cheap, identical across brands and last for years; covers are the part that gets sun, spills and changes of mind. A stack of flat covers also fits in a drawer where four made-up cushions do not.

Boucle has been everywhere for a few years now and it has earned it. The word means "loop" — the yarn is spun with loops left proud of the surface rather than twisted smooth — and that is the whole effect. The looped surface catches light unevenly, so it reads as texture from across a room where a flat weave reads as a colour. Up close it is genuinely soft rather than scratchy, which is not true of a lot of textured weaves.

It is polyester, and we would rather say so than let the word boucle imply wool. What you get for that is a cover that takes a gentle machine wash and does not felt, shrink or attract moths — which, for something people put their heads on, is the practical trade.

Styling notes

Texture only registers next to something smooth. Put it against flat linen, leather, or a plain cotton throw rather than in a pile of other knits — three textured cushions together cancel each other out and the sofa goes muddy.

One cushion changes a corner and two will anchor a whole sofa, which is conveniently how these arrive. Four is where a room starts to look like a showroom. On a dark sofa, oat is the highest-contrast thing you can add without introducing a colour; on a pale one it reads as quiet texture instead.

Size the insert up, not to match. An 18-inch insert in this 16-inch cover fills out the corners; a 16 in a 16 sags at the points, and that is the single most common reason a good cover looks cheap. Feather-down gives the plump, slouched shape you are probably picturing; polyester holds a squarer shape and does not need plumping, but it does not soften with age either.

Good to know

• Use an 18-inch insert for a full shape. Feather-down if you want it to slouch.
• The oat reads warmer in person than the listing photos suggest — closer to a soft oatmeal than the flat grey-beige a phone camera makes of it. Colour is the thing people misjudge most on a neutral.
• Gentle cycle or hand wash, dry clean if you would rather not risk it, no bleach. The loops are the point, and hot, hard agitation is what flattens them.
• Loops can snag on a watch, a ring or a cat. Work a pull back through from the reverse rather than cutting it; a cut loop unravels its neighbours.
