Why we picked it

Most blackout curtains look like blackout curtains: flat, slightly shiny, and obviously there to block something. We picked these because they look like the other kind. The weave has the uneven texture of linen and the pinch pleats give the top a tailored fold, so with the room lit they read as ordinary curtains. Drawn at night or in the morning, they do what you bought them for, which is stopping streetlight, early sun and glare on a screen.

The linen is a minority of the fabric. These are 90% recycled polyester with 10% linen, over a coated lining, and it matters if you were expecting a linen curtain. This is a linen-look curtain with a practical job, and in a bedroom that job is worth more than the fiber.

Styling notes

Two rules decide whether any curtain looks good. First, fullness: panels adding up to roughly twice the width of the window, so they gather in folds instead of stretching flat. Second, the rod. Mount it close to the ceiling and a hand-width or more past the frame on each side, and the window looks taller and wider than it is. For blackout curtains the extra width also stops light leaking round the edges.

Pinch pleats need rings. The hooks come in the box and the rings don't, so buy rings in a finish that matches your rod. Steam the packing creases out rather than ironing them, because a hot iron is the quickest way to flatten the pleats you paid for.

Good to know

  • Rings are not included. Pick a size that fits your rod.
  • The blackout lining keeps daylight out too. These are made for rooms where you want the dark, not for filtering light.
  • For proper fullness, use panels totalling about twice your window width.
  • Mostly polyester, so they hold their pleats and hang straight, but they are not a natural-fiber curtain.
